Historical and Biographical Context

李白 (Lǐ Bái, 701–762) composed this poem during a hasty return after being pardoned from exile, hence his jubilation.

This poem, 早发白帝城 (Zǎo fā Báidìchéng), "Morning Departure from Baidi City," describes the dizzying descent through the Yangzi Gorges, carried by the poet's relief and joy.
