Chinese Calligraphy Grids

Here are the different grid models most commonly used in Chinese calligraphy:

The nine palaces model, composed of nine boxes.

The Hui palace model, composed of a rectangle within a square, resembling the shape of the character "Hui". The vertical edge of the inner rectangle is equal to 0.76 times that of the outer square. The horizontal edge is equal to 0.47 times that of the square. It is a very good model that allows for an overall view of the character. It has been noticed that students using this model produced very well-balanced characters.

The rice character model, which, as the name suggests, represents the Chinese character for rice. It was the most commonly used.

The field character model, which, as you might guess, represents the Chinese character for the rice field. It is very suitable for writing characters with a pen, pencil, etc.

The choice of a grid model for learning Chinese calligraphy should be guided by individual preferences.
