The Bund

The Bund, 外滩 Wàitān in Mandarin Chinese, is the symbol of the city of Shanghai. It is actually Zhongshan Donlu Street (中山东路 Zhōngshān dōnglù) that runs along the Huangpu River 黄浦 huángpŭ.

Bund is an Anglo-Indian word that means a "muddy bank." Built in the 1920s, foreign concessions settled on this land, which was initially the only area authorized for foreigners. The Bund quickly became the most coveted avenue in the 1930s, and one can find the buildings of the great companies of that era.
