Dialogue of Unit 7

有的 yǒude and 还有一些 hái yǒu yìxiē are both translated as "some", but Yueyue's line uses them in two different ways, and that is what makes it tricky (a student asked me the question, and it is a good one).

有的是我的，还有一些是哥哥的。 Yǒude shì wǒ de, hái yǒu yìxiē shì gēge de. Some are mine, and others are my older brother's.

Had she said 有的是我的，有的是哥哥的。 Yǒude shì wǒ de, yǒude shì gēge de., she would have split the pile in two, and we would translate it as "some are mine and the others are my older brother's". The whole pile would be accounted for.

By switching to 还有一些, literally "there are still a few", she adds a second group without closing the set: there may well be books that belong neither to her nor to her brother. Hence "others", and not "the others".

It is subtle. Remember above all that 有的…有的… closes the set and that 有的…还有一些… leaves it open. The basic distinction between 有的 and 有些 is covered on the Grammar 7 page.
